Awards, AI, and an OLED Breakthrough: What Moved the Lighting Industry in September 2026
September 2026 was defined in the lighting industry by three strong signals: Germany handed out its most important design award, artificial intelligence officially found its place in lighting designers' toolkits, and Universal Display unveiled a technology that could redefine OLED efficiency. Here's what it all means for the industry today.
01 · Awards & Design
Germany rewards the best lighting projects of the year
On September 10 in Stuttgart, the German Lighting Design Award 2026 gala took place, crowning the winners of one of Europe's most prestigious lighting design awards. The title of Designer of the Year went to studio team licht, while the jury's special award was given to Licht Kunst Licht for the exterior illumination of Cologne Cathedral — a project that has long served as a benchmark in the lighting of historic landmarks. The audience award, meanwhile, went to studio LightLife for its lighting of the German Mining Museum in Bochum [1].
For us, as market observers, this isn't just a list of winners — it's above all a map of inspiration for the coming season. These are names worth following: projects like these set the direction that we'll be seeing on trade fair stands and in interior design projects across Europe a year or two from now.
02 · Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence enters the lighting designer's toolkit
From Europe we move across the ocean — on September 15 and 16, Dallas hosted the ArchLIGHT Summit conference, held alongside Dallas Design Week and the DALI Alliance conference. This lineup of events alone shows just how strongly the lighting industry is beginning to intertwine with the world of digital technology and automation.
One of the most interesting parts of the program was a talk by artist Zincan, who presented concrete AI tools that lighting designers can use today — while also honestly pointing out the solutions that, for now, haven't lived up to the hopes placed in them [2]. This is an important voice in the conversation, since the topic of artificial intelligence in lighting design is still fairly niche within the Polish industry, and practical, proven use cases are worth their weight in gold.
03 · OLED Technology
OLEDX: Universal Display promises to extract nearly 100% of generated light
From design practice, we move to the technology at the very foundation of lighting. Universal Display Corporation has announced the OLEDX platform — a solution combining a transparent cathode, a reflective anode, and a layer of nanoparticles designed to recover light previously "trapped" within the structure of the OLED [3].
According to the company, this technology should allow nearly 100% of generated light to be extracted, while also offering wider viewing angles and the ability to tailor the efficiency profile to a specific application — including flexible and rollable displays. While at first glance this may sound like news for the display industry rather than architectural lighting, it's worth keeping an eye on: breakthroughs in OLED efficiency have a way of eventually trickling down into energy-efficient lighting solutions that later reach the consumer and commercial markets.
